DSM Nutritional Products, Inc., Parsippany, NJ, is the combination of two innovators in life sciences—DSM, Heerlen, The Netherlands, and Roche Vitamins Inc. According to Lynda Doyle, director of marketing—New Ingredients, acquiring Roche Vitamins was a key step in DSM’s vision of expanding its presence and attaining the global leadership position in the life science industry. In fact, acquiring Roche effectively doubled the size of DSM’s Life Sciences Cluster. “The new organization offers a combined innovative capacity for new product development, applications expertise and operational and manufacturing excellence that no other company can meet,” she said, adding, “DSM Nutritional Products, Inc. also provides a solid platform for growth through technology and innovation by combining the strengths of the two companies.” The joining of these two nutraceutical powerhouses was made official in October last year, and the result, Ms. Doyle said, is the emergence of DSM as the unquestioned global supplier to the life science industry, with sales more than double that of its nearest competitor.
In examining what each company brings to the table, Roche Vitamins offers its expertise in research, market development, technology and fortification, while DSM leverages its know-how in the life sciences, biotechnology and operations. Together as DSM Nutritional Products, Inc. Ms. Doyle is certain that it will be THE place for innovative solutions for those companies involved in dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals and functional/conventional foods.
For these key markets, DSM Nutritional Products, Inc. boasts a significant product portfolio, including bulk vitamins, carotenoids and custom nutrient blends, as well as acidulants, omega-3 and omega-6 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), dextromethorphan and nutraceuticals. Some of the new launches include Lutein 5% CWS cold water dispersible beadlets made with FloraGLO® crystalline lutein for food and beverage applications; Zeaxanthin 20% fluid suspension for manufacturing soft gelatin capsules and fat-based foods; Beta-carotene 10% EM yellow and red for direct use in food systems—they provide bright yellow to strawberry red colors as well as vitamin A activity; Teavigo™ green tea extract, containing up to 94% EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate); Lycopene 5% TG/P and Lutein 5% TG/P, which are highly stable free flowing beadlets utilizing gelatin from a poultry source, specially designed for use in direct compression formulations; Ropufa™ 75 n-3 EE, which is a concentrated form of LC-omega-3; and Lafti® second generation probiotics, which deliver an efficacious dose to the appropriate GI location.
With a high interest in being not only an ingredient supplier but also a total solution provider, the company also has global research and development, manufacturing, distribution and marketing services. In fact, Ms. Doyle said, “DSM is a strong scientific group that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to research new compounds related to health maintenance and the prevention of chronic diseases.” She added, “We meet our customers’ needs further by serving as a resource for innovative solutions. This keeps our customers ahead of the curve in meeting the needs of consumers.” To that end, Ms. Doyle said DSM Nutritional Products Inc. would continue to anticipate consumer and industry needs and be prepared to meet these needs proactively from many perspectives. Whether it’s driving the science in nutrition and health; educating health professionals and consumers about the importance of good nutrition and its role in health maintenance or developing highly stable product formulations to meet growing consumer demands, the company will rise to those challenges.
For the future, Ms. Doyle said the company would continue to do what it does best—create markets and develop nutritional ingredients that are formulated for a variety of applications. “DSM develops markets by driving science and research and providing consumer and health professional education programs through the Vitamin Nutrition Information Service (VNIS), a third party educational program for health professionals and media sponsored by DSM. With all of this behind us we are looking forward to a very strong future as a major global player in the nutraceuticals market and are working together with our global industry partners in bringing into the mainstream innovative ingredients that offer important health benefits to the consumer.”—R.M.W.
