A family-owned company since 1895, Rouen, France-based Nexira continues to expand its ingredients range and reinforce its global position within the nutraceuticals industry. Most recently, in October, Nexira acquired Tournay Biotechnology, a European expert in the extraction of active botanicals for the nutraceutical and dietary supplements industries. Tournay, a family-owned company founded in 1992, produces high quality extracts that include cranberry, green coffee and green tea.
“With this new acquisition, Nexira, one of the world’s leaders in natural ingredients, is expanding its range of ingredients and reinforcing its positioning toward the health and wellness market, which will soon represent 35% of its commercial activity,” noted Mathieu Dondain, marketing manager with Nexira. “Nexira confirms its growth target of 125 million euros in global consolidated sales by 2015 and growth projects in North America are in the pipeline for the near future.”
In 2008, Nexira acquired the French company Bio Serae Laboratoires, which specialized in cactus and other active botanical extracts for the nutrition and health industries. Since then, Nexira Health has been growing by adding new ingredients and accessing the network of partners from Nexira Food, formerly known as Colloides Naturels International (CNI). Nexira resulted from a synergistic merger of CNI and Bio Serae that was finalized in December 2011.
Today, Nexira is a premier supplier of innovative ingredients sustainably sourced from nature for the food, nutrition and health and wellness markets. Historically, the family-owned company made its reputation as a world leader in acacia gum. The company’s ingredients include antioxidants and actives for weight management, sport nutrition and anti-stress, along with a host of functional botanical extracts.
The company’s wide scope of innovative ingredients includes Oli Ola, an organic olive extract for cardiovascular heath with a guaranteed level of hydroxytyrosol, a potent polyphenol. Nexira operates a solvent-free manufacturing line for the production of Oli Ola. Additionally, Fibregum is an all-natural and GMO-free source of soluble dietary fiber (90% content on dry weight). Clinical studies have demonstrated the numerous health benefits of Fibregum and its prebiotic properties, according to the company.
“The unique progressive fermentation pattern of Fibregum by beneficial intestinal microflora improves digestive health with no negative effects,” said Mr. Dondain. “Cactinea, Neopuntia and IdalG are three more of our premium ingredients with a strong scientific and marketing background.”
The acquisition of Tournay Biotechnology will expand Nexira’s range of ingredients. Recognized for its unique know-how in the extraction of botanical extracts and technological innovation, Tournay has an ISO 22000-certified and AFSSAPS-approved state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located near Bordeaux, France. Tournay has an extensive product portfolio, including its flagship brand Exocyan, a unique product line of cranberry extracts standardized to proanthocyanidins (PACs) content.
PACs are condensed tannins, a type of flavonoid, with antioxidant and other health benefits. New data show the PACs in cranberries exhibit a distinct “anti-adhesion” mechanism that helps protect the body from harmful bacteria, as compared to the PACs found in grape and apple juice or green tea.”
As for other clinical data, the company recently conducted a new study on Vinitrox, a synergetic combination of apple and grape polyphenols for sport nutrition. Results from the clinical trial involving 50 subjects indicated improvement to physical capacities and to delay of the fatigue barrier. Data will be released at SupplySide West this month. The polyphenol synergy and anti-inflammatory effect of Vinitrox have been demonstrated in other scientific studies as well, Mr. Dondain noted.
Nexira experienced double-digit growth for 2011 and 2012, feeling no ill effects from a slumping economy. In fact, with an increasingly global wellness industry, and particular interest from Asia, the company opened a new subsidiary in India and a new office in China “to better serve the needs of our customers and to provide technical support in these regions,” Mr. Dondain added.
