Boehringer Ingelheim: Minerals And More
As one of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in the world, with more than 26,000 employees, Boehringer Ingelheim, Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany, is a multinational powerhouse that supplies the human pharmaceutical and animal health, chemical and vitamin supplement markets. With over 100 years of experience in the business, the company is also the largest family-owned company in the world.
Boehringer Ingelheim brings its years of expertise into the nutraceuticals industry as well, with a range of mineral products available to the market. “We manufacture high value minerals with high quality for nutritional products,” said Thomas Steinmetz, marketing manager-organic salts. “We guarantee batch to batch consistency and top performance with pharmaceutical production levels.” Boehringer Ingelheim also has dedicated production sites with strict cGMP compliance. The company recently invested DM16 million in a computer controlled plant to further guarantee the quality of its products.
Boehringer Ingelheim has two production plants for organic minerals, one in Ingelheim for material manufacture through crystallization and the other in Bordeaux, France, for spray drying. The company also develops customized products for its larger customers. “We also provide scientific support by sponsoring in vitro studies in areas such as bioavailability,” explained Mr. Steinmetz.
Major product lines include calcium, magnesium and potassium. The newest concentration at the company is an ultralow lead calcium citrate 21% product. The product, “CP65,” adheres to California Proposition 65 rules and was tested by an independent laboratory.
Also new is a directly compressible calcium citrate 21% product and a calcium citrate 24% product for better solubility. Other plans for the business include growing the magnesium market in the U.S. “Magnesium is twice as large a market in Germany,” said Mr. Steinmetz. “In the U.S. 37% of Americans do not get enough magnesium. There are so many indications for magnesium—cardiovascular, cramps relief, stress, migraines, muscles, asthma, etc. One of Boehringer Ingelheim’s goals is to educate the U.S. market about this.”
In addition to its minerals focus, Boehringer Ingelheim also has a phytochemical business, complete with its own farms, extract manufacture and synthesis. —E.S.
