Waitaki Biosciences Highlights New Specialty Ingredients, Expanded Capabilities
The ingredients target health concerns in high demand categories.

Waitaki Biosciences, the New Zealand-based manufacturer of quality natural nutritional ingredients for the dietary supplement and personal care markets, will showcase for the first time in the U.S. three new specialty ingredients at Booth T169.
The new products are the result of a significant, recently completed expansion project that increased capacity and developed new extraction technologies.
The new products, launched earlier this year at Vitafoods Europe, build on Waitaki’s portfolio of natural nutritional ingredients from high quality New Zealand raw materials. The ingredients target health concerns in high demand categories, and expand on the company’s branded ingredients line anchored by StimuCal, Waitaki Bioscience’s patent-pending, concentrated source of natural calcium with bone stimulating protein. The additions to the portfolio are:
- ActiPhen freeze dried kiwifruit powder that promotes optimal digestive health;
- CassiPure anthocyanin rich blackcurrant extract for eye health, cognition and immune support
- PernaTec Oil, an omega-3 and phospholipid rich greenshell mussel oil extract.
New Zealand’s strict non-GMO policies and environmentally sustainable growing practices create the perfect setting to provide the “clean” ingredients in demand by consumers. Because of the seasonal hole in the ozone layer, higher than normal levels of protective phytonutrients are present in New Zealand-grown fruit varieties, from which ActiPhen and CassiPure are derived, providing distinct advantages over competing ingredients grown elsewhere.
“Consumers are looking for pure ingredients that have a minimal environmental footprint while offering identifiable benefits,” said Waitaki Biosciences Chief Executive Craig McIntosh. “New Zealand’s wholesome environment has an added value for customers concerned by of the challenges of a global supply chain.”
An ambitious expansion project over the last two years has been completed, including the successful installation and commissioning of a new 1 ton freeze dryer that adds an additional 200 MT of freeze dried material to annual production. Plans are already underway to extend this facility because of high demand. The company also built a sophisticated new custom-designed solvent extraction facility, effectively creating an entirely new business, adding high value marine and botanical extracts to its traditional product portfolio of dried meat and marine products. Investment continues with the conversion of an existing 1,100 sq m building into a GMP compliant manufacturing unit for dry production.
“Not only does the new freeze dryer increase capacity at our plant, but by dedicating this new dryer specifically to botanical products it enables greater efficiencies of production through our existing meat and marine based lines, further cementing Waitaki Biosciences’ position as one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers of high value nutraceutical ingredients,” said Mr. McIntosh.
