Lycored’s Lumenato, a golden tomato extract formulated for skin health support, was evidenced in a multi-phase clinical study to boost collagen and ceramide levels in the skin, and significantly improve the overall health and appearance of skin after supplementation.

The vegan carotenoid complex was the subject of the recent clinical study, appearing in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, which first evaluated its effects on skin cells in in vitro settings. The tests demonstrated that the extract, rich in carotenoids and other nutrients, was linked to the activity of genes that work to enhance collagen production, control inflammation and oxidative stress, and contribute to tissue healing and protection in cultured human skin cells, via a number of innate immune activities.

The carotenoids and tocopherols in Lumenato were shown to strengthen the skin barrier and promote its resilience against environmental stressors, the authors noted.

In the second phase of the trial, 66 women between the ages of 35 and 60 were recruited to take either a placebo or Lumenato once per day for 16 weeks to evaluate changes in skin condition, in a double-blind design. Using a variety of measurements, the researchers found that, compared to placebo, Lumenato supplementation was linked to a variety of measurements indicating improvements in skin condition, such as benefits to those with an impaired skin barrier, improvements to skin smoothness and hydration, and reductions in redness and pore size.

“These carotenoids and tocopherols strengthen the skin barrier and equip it with tools to cope with environmental insult,” the authors of the study concluded. “Moreover, we demonstrated a correlation between barrier strength to specific skin appearance-related benefits such as reduction in redness and in pores and skin smoothening effect. We are also excited to report, for the first time, the existence of olfactory receptors in human dermal fibroblasts and their significant up-regulation by golden tomato extract.”

Lumenato is patented for both composition and skin benefits, and is an allergen- and gluten-free, Kosher, Halal, and Non-GMO Project verified ingredient which can be formulated for supplements, foods, and beverages.
