Supplementation with a single 400 mg dose of a branded form of ashwagandha (NooGandha, from Virginia-based biotech company Specnova) significantly increased short-term/working memory, helped sustain attention, and increased response times when compared to placebo, according to a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

NooGandha is produced using a proprietary extraction process that focuses and concentrates the specific compounds with nootropic bioactivity, according to Specnova. The benefits of NooGandha can be seen with as little as 225 mg for most benefits, the company said, and 400 mg for acute/single dose benefits.

Study Details and Design

This double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study at Texas A&M was conducted to examine the effect of supplementation with ashwagandha extract on executive function (i.e., mental processes that allow for planning, focused attention, remembering instructions, and juggling multiple tasks successfully).

Thirteen healthy male and female subjects were randomly assigned to consume 400 mg of NooGandha or a placebo. Subjects completed four cognitive function tests and then ingested a capsule of NooGandha ashwagandha extract or placebo with 8 ounces of water.

Participants repeated cognitive function tests after ingestion of the supplement. After 7 days, the participants repeated the experiment, alternating with the treatment they previously did not get (NooGandha or placebo).

Results

The results showed that compared to placebo, supplementation with a single 400 mg dose of NooGandha:

  • Significantly increased short-term/working memory;
  • Increased sustained attention (maintained reaction times and prevention of mental fatigue); and
  • Increased response times (showed less metal fatigue).

“This was the first time a single dose of ashwagandha as NooGandha was shown to have acute cognitive performance benefits,” said Sebastian Balcombe, CEO of Specnova. “This study further solidifies the role of NooGandha in the ashwagandha and nootropic market and makes it the ideal ingredient for any product where a sensory effect is desired such as energy drinks, pre-workout drinks and powders, and supplements for gamers.”

The markets for brain health, stress relief, and cognitive support are in high demand today. The ashwagandha market alone is expected to reach $1.4 billion by 2028, according to Grandview Research. The global brain health supplement market is expected to reach $13.38 billion at a CAGR of 8.0%.
