The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) has issued a new industry advisory on accurate quantification of EPA, DHA, and total omega-3 content of omega-3 oils by an analytical method called GC-FID.

The advisory contains practical approaches and tips from analytical chemists with multi-year proficiency in EPA and DHA quantification in the annual AOCS GOED Nutraceutical Oils Laboratory Proficiency Program.

The document is meant to provide useful advice for laboratories to improve their accuracy of EPA and DHA quantification in omega-3 oils and contains information that is not normally provided in official method descriptions. The advisory complements information in GOED’s guidance documents that provide information around testing the quality of EPA/DHA omega-3 oils. With the advisory, GOED aims to provide a stimulus for improving the accuracy of EPA and DHA quantification in the coming years.
