Bioiberica’s DAOgest Authorized as Novel Food ingredient in EU

The enzyme is designed to support symptoms of histamine intolerance.

Bioiberica has announced that its diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme ingredient, DAOgest, ahs been granted Novel Food status by the European Commission. The ingredient is now immediately commercially available in Europe.

This approval paves the way for European formulators to develop new supplement solutions formulated to ameliorate histamine intolerance, an emerging gastrointestinal condition thought to effect between one and three percent of the global population.

As consumer awareness of histamine intolerance increases, DAO based solutions are estimated to increase at a CAGR of 10.4% between 2020 and 2028, Bioiberica reports, citing Grand View Research.

DAO is naturally-present throughout the digestive tract, and breaks down histamine ingested from food. Histamine intolerance symptoms occur when the body doesn’t produce enough DAO to break down ingested histamine, which can lead to excess histamine in the body and possible allergy-like symptoms.

“At Bioiberica, we’re passionate about developing solutions that tackle emerging health issues, and now that we have been granted Novel Food status for DAOgest, we’re excited to see the positive change it can bring for European consumers who are affected by histamine intolerance,” said Antonio Vendrell, marketing director, Bioiberica. “DAOgest is already being successfully used as a supplement ingredient in the US. Now, we’re calling on our industry partners in Europe to join forces with us to develop long-term solutions for the digestive health market that will aim to improve lives for generations to come. Together, we can help make histamine intolerance history.”

DAOgest is effective at a dose of 4.2 mg per serving, and the ingredient has been the subject of clinical research supporting its role in managing the symptoms of histamine intolerance, such as sneezing, hives, and gastrointestinal issues.
