Beneo Expands Sugar Reduction Line with scFOS Ingredient

The new short-chain fructooligosaccharide ingredient ingredient offers a mild sweet taste, and has bulking applications in various food formats.

Functional ingredient supplier Beneo has expanded its portfolio of sugar reduction with the launch of Beneo-scL85, a short-chain fructooligosaccharide (scFOS). The new variant offers customers greater versatility to replace sugars and enrich foods with dietary fiber.

Citing research by FCMG Gurus, Beneo reports that ‘low in sugar’ claims influence the purchasing decisions of 57% of consumers. The new scFOS allows manufacturers to have more variety and increased potential to offer products with less sugar.

The scFOS is a fiber derived from beet sugar that offers mild sweet taste, solubility, and natural credentials that can contribute to improvements in taste and texture, and possibilities for bulking in applications like dairy, bakery, and cereals. The ingredient is made in Germany at a dedicated production facility, and is available to customers globally as a syrup.

Using scFOS allows manufacturers to directly replace sugar with dietary fiber, which improves the nutritional profile, allowing manufacturers to achieve better scores in front-of-pack labeling systems worldwide.

“Short-chain fructooligosaccharide from beet sugar is a valuable addition to BENEO’s portfolio because it increases flexibility and availability for our customers,” said Eric Neven, commercial managing director for Beneo’s functional fibers. “In combination with the increased production capacity of our chicory root fiber production plant in Chile, BENEO’s short-chain fructoligosaccharide will further secure supply to meet the high demand for solutions to reduce sugar.”
