Nexira Launches Third Phase of Acacia Sustainability Program

The company is taking its next steps in preserving natural resources, supporting local communities, and promoting sustainable development in Africa.

Nexira has begun the third phase of its acacia sustainability program, which aims to improve the company’s environmental and social impact in Africa, along with reductions in the company’s carbon footprint.

The company aligns its approach with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the first and second phase of the program, which lasted from 2009 to 2020, Nexira worked in Chad in collaboration with SOS Sahel and its partners to protect the local acacia resource, enhance lives of local populations, and promote sustainability. The company increased acacia gum production, while reforesting, taking actions to support biodiversity through assisted natural regeneration, and more.

In the third phase of the program, the company will strengthen the acacia gum sector by getting more producers involved, with the goal of particularly benefitting women, and creating a greater area of responsible forest management.

Key objectives include:

  • Involvement of 200 villages and 50,000 producers
  • Work on 300,000 hectares of sustainably managed forest
  • Increase in quality and productivity of gum acacia from 2,600 to 5,000 tons
  • Empowering women involved in the sector
  • Implementing regenerative natural agriculture methods
  • Development in the acacia gum value chain
  • Expanding access to financial services for producers
  • Sequester over 60,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually

In 2023, Nexira also commissioned photorgraphy from Nicholas Henry, in a series called “Trees of Life.” These photos were presented for the first time at the Photoclimat event in Paris in September. The aim was to give wider visibility to Nexira’s program and officially launch the third phase.

“We must look to the future and carry strong values that correspond to us. Global warming is a significant challenge and, with Inavea Caring By Nature project, Nexira is committed to contribute to collective carbon neutrality,” said Mathieu Dondain, CEO. Inavea is the company’s first carbon neutral ingredient brand.

Since 2009, Nexira has been measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Between 2019 and 2022, the company has reduced carbon emissions by nine percent, representing about 5,500 tons of CO2.
