GC Rieber VivoMega Now Runs on 100% Renewable Energy

Its three omega-3 facilities are now fully supported with energy from an electric steam boiler.

GC Rieber VivoMega, a supplier of omega-3 oil concentrates, announced that it is now fully supported with 100% renewable energy. Over several months, the company implemented an electric steam boiler to power its marine and microalgae omega-3 operations.

The boiler has an initial output of 7.5 MW, which can be increased to double the output if needed. Annually, the company can power its factories with 25GWh of steam annually for the production of its omega-3 concentrates.

“The energy supplied comes from our green hydropower plants and replaces our oil boiler that burned fish oil for energy. This means that the fish oil we burned previously can instead be repurposed into the food chain to produce fish feed and that GC Rieber VivoMega emissions will be vastly diminished,” said Frode Jenssen, COO of GC Rieber VivoMega. “In the next few years, we seek to only consume green energy from biodiesel and electricity and discontinue fossil fuels. We are extremely proud of this additional investment to further our dedication to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.”

In Norway, nearly all electricity comes from renewable resources, primarily through hydropower which produces no air pollutants and has the fewest greenhouse gas emissions of all power generation technologies. The GC Rieber VivoMega boiler is a standing cylindrical, fully welded steam boiler built in accordance with PED 2014/68/EU.

“Natural resources should be passed on to future generations in the same or better condition than we found them,” the company stated.
