b-2Cool Shows Efficacy in Symptomatic Treatment of OA

By: Lisa Olivo

Two new studies, presented by Bioiberica at the ESCEO Congress in Milan, have shown that b-2Cool, the type II native collagen by Bioiberica, reduces pain and inflammation and improves mobility of joints in osteoarthritis.

The study was conducted jointly with the pharmacology department of the University of Florence (Italy). It was a pre-clinical study in rats induced with osteoarthritis. The results show that a dose of just 10mg/Kg per day of type II native collagen (b-2Cool) alleviates pain and motor skills and reduces inflammation and joint degeneration. It also shows that its analgesic effect is comparable to the group that was administered 250mg/Kg per day of glucosamine. “The efficacy shown is particularly relevant taking into account the dose at which native collagen is administered,”affirmed Daniel Martínez, R&D director of the Human Health area at Bioiberica.

The second clinical study was conducted with the medical school of the University of Osmangazi (Eskisehir, Turkey) with the objective of evaluating the efficacy of this supplement in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee. The patients were split into two groups: one group took paracetamol and the other group took paracetamol combined with type II native collagen (b-2Cool) for three months. At the end of the study the patients treated with the combination showed a significant improvement in pain and mobility compared to the beginning of the treatment and compared to the group that took paracetamol alone. “The results show that type II native collagen can afford additional benefit to conventional therapy,” added Mr. Martínez.

Type II native collagen is the primary protein of the structure of the joint cartilage, providing resistance and strength. Generally, there is a degradation of this protein in diseases of the joints, which leads to a degradation of the joints. Oral administration of type II native collagen has been shown to help regulate the inflammatory response at joint level, enabling the health of joints to be conserved.
