Bioiberica Commits to Climate Neutrality by 2050

Renewable energy, energy efficiency, wastewater reduction, and more strategies were outlined in the company’s 2023 climate strategy report.

Bioiberica, a global life science company which supplies ingredients to the nutraceuticals industry, has announced its commitment to climate neutrality by 2050.

To do this, the company will achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2024, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by the year 2030, on its way to the 2050 deadline. The new goals are further outlined in the company’s climate strategy report, which outlines the plans in more detail. The greenhouse gas emissions reductions will be done in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which includes emissions directly produced by the organization, as well as indirectly-caused emissions that come from where purchased energy is produced.

This move is part of Bioiberica’s strategy to reduce its environmental impact, which began more than 45 years ago when the company was founded.

“Bioiberica’s production is based on a 100% circular bioeconomy, using manufacturing processes designed to minimize the consumption of water, energy and auxiliary raw materials,” said Luis Solera, CEO of Bioiberica. “Our new climate strategy report includes an inventory of our current greenhouse gas emissions alongside the targets set and the milestones achieved so far. The report also outlines how we plan to tackle future challenges in line with our commitment to become climate-neutral, focusing on business opportunities and more sustainable activities.”

Energy efficiency

The company will be improving its energy efficiency to grow on the platform of its ISO 50001 certification in 2012. This certification involved implementing an energy management system that helsp to improve energy efficiency and implement specific changes to reduce consumption.

The company has already installed a renovated lighting system, more efficient factory equipment like boilers and cooling systems, leak-reducing measures, and production process optimization. Future improvements will include purchasing equipment and services and installing 1,000 kW of photovoltaic power for self-use.

Wastewater Reductions

Bioiberica achieved ISO 14001 and European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme certifications in 1997 and 1999 respectively, and the company continues to prioritize water management.

In more recent years, the company has begun to reuse 21% of its wastewater for different manufacturing processes, which it aims to increase to a 50% rate. The company will also reduce water usage per ton of product, and ensure operations only return clean water to local water sources. The company will engage in collaboration with localities to ensure the access to returned water.

“As the climate emergency becomes increasingly urgent, we’re taking action and doing all that we can to minimise Bioiberica’s environmental impact. The framework set out in our new Climate Strategy Report outlines two key focus areas – decarbonising the economy and mitigating the effects of climate change”, said Solera. “We understand the challenges that lie ahead, and we know there is a long way to go before reaching our 2050 goal of complete climate neutrality, but we are committed to protecting and sustaining the planet, so that it can continue to house all forms of life – people, animals and plants – for years to come.”
