CGA-7 Green Coffee Extract by Vidya Herbs Achieves Self-Affirmed GRAS Status

The coffee extract, formulated for metabolic health benefits, is now primed for the U.S. market.

Vidya Herbs, Inc. announced that its new green coffee extract, CGA-7, which is standardized to have high-purity chlorogenic acid, has achieved self-affirmed GRAS signed by a qualified expert panel.

CGA-7 is a unique extract, whose name reflects that it contains all 7 isomers of chlorogenic acid present in green coffee beans. CGA-7 is substantiated to support weight management through a daily dose of 500 mg, a health claim which is protected by a U.S. patent.

“CGA-7 achieving self-affirmed GRAS is a culmination of our company’s in-house R&D team efforts, spearheaded by K Shyam Prasad, Vidya Herbs’ founder,” Steve Geiger, vice president of sales and operations for Vidya’s U.S. division, said. “The expert panel’s review of the proprietary ingredient was precipitated by the publication of trials supporting both safety and efficacy.”

One study on CGA-7 recruited 60 participants for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in which an experimental group supplemented with 500 mg/day of CGA-7 for 12 weeks. Results indicated that the CGA-7 group saw a significant decrease in body weight, body mass index, fat mass, and percent body fat compared to the placebo group. The trial was published in the peer-reviewed journal SAGE Open Medicine.

“CGA-7 is unique among green coffee extracts due to its complete supply chain vertical integration, as well as its constituent chlorogenic profile, both of which provide the brand marketer with powerful marketing points,” Geiger said. “The green coffee beans used are harvested from Vidya’s own coffee estate in Chikmagalur, India and extraction occurs at in-house facilities in Bangalore.”

The cold water-soluble material is free of the major 8 allergens (milk, eggs, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans), non-GMO, and is formulated for capsules, tablets, softgels, powders, RTDs and functional food.
