Mineral supplier Gadot Biochemical Industries has recently solved several critical manufacturing challenges related to incorporating magnesium into gummies, the company reported.
 
“As mineral sales continue to grow with consumer demand for magnesium, calcium, and zinc leading the way, pill fatigue more quickly sets in,” said Ohad Cohen, CEO of Gadot Biochemical Industries. “Gummies are a popular treat-like alternative to obtain nutraceuticals such as minerals, but historically, magnesium has been most difficult to work with in this form.”
 
While magnesium exhibits good gelificaiton, it is bitter and has a sandy texture, however, the company has found solutions to these and other challenges, according to Cohen.
 
“Magnesium compounds like magnesium oxide often have poor solubility and can impart an unpleasant taste or texture to gummies,” said Cohen. “Additionally, these compounds may degrade during processing, reducing their bioavailability and effectiveness. Therefore, finding an efficient and palatable method of magnesium fortification in gummies has been a longstanding challenge for nutraceutical industry product developers.”
 
Gadot’s gummy fortification method involves enhancing its dispersibility into the gummy matrix, allowing for higher bioavailability and efficacy. The company has also eliminated the sandy and gritty texture associated with other magnesium sources. Additionally, the mineral’s stability and bioavailability is maintained throughout the gummy manufacturing process, ensuring that the final product retains the same potency as the magnesium ingredients do in other delivery formats, according to the company.
 
“As gummies grow in demand, the opportunities to add magnesium are significant,” Cohen said. “Consumers commonly seek out products to support mood, sleep, energy, and overall good health, and they also know to turn to minerals such as magnesium for its benefits.”
 
The company also notes that it has capabilities to incorporate other ingredients into gummies, including calcium, zinc, calcium-magnesium, and apple cider vinegar. Its magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium, and sodium ingredients come in different forms, such as citrates, gluconates, and bisglycinates.
