An in vitro study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences characterized the mechanism of action behind Bioiberica’s hyaluronic acid ingredient, Dermial, in skin cells.

The peer-reviewed study expands upon Dermial’s antioxidant and regenerative properties, and demonstrates the ingredient’s potential in supplements, functional foods, and cosmetics.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as hyaluronic acid are a component of the extracellular matrix in the skin, and maintain skin hydration, while regulating cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation. GAGs decrease with age, along with collagen and elastin in the dermis, which leads to a loss of skin moisture, dermal thickness, and healthy appearance.

 Study Findings

Dermial was shown to have a concentration of 67%, and is also composed of other GAGs including dermatan sulfate and collagen. The ingredient had activity in keratinocytes and fibroblasts, inducing cell proliferation, migration, and an increased synthesis of types I and III collagen, elastin, and GAGs. This suggested that the ingredient would have moisturizing, regenerative, and anti-aging properties in the skin. The study was also the first to suggest the potential antioxidant activity of Dermial.

Previous research suggests that the ingredient is easily absorbed in the intestine, which suggests that it could be used in oral as well as topical applications, Bioiberica reports.

“The conclusions of this latest peer-reviewed paper mark an exciting development in the research exploring Dermial, further verifying the science-based benefits of the ingredient and its potential in nutricosmetics,” said Daniel Martínez Puig, head of human health R&D, Bioiberica. “We can’t wait to unlock exciting opportunities for brands already in or considering entering this market. Following these promising outcomes, our next step will be to carry out a clinical trial to confirm the efficacy of Dermial in humans.”

“The ‘beauty from within’ market has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, fuelled by rising consumer interest in overall well-being, the holistic health movement, and growing awareness that beauty can be achieved from the inside-out via nutrition,” said Antonio Vendrell, marketing director. “Many consumers are taking a more proactive approach to their skin health, making them more open to trying nutritional solutions, including ingestible beauty products.”
