Jungbunzlauer Reduces Its Carbon Footprint

By: Lisa Olivo

The Swiss-based international company Jungbunzlauer unveiled substantial progress in its reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as certified by an independent third party myclimate.

In the decade from 2003 to 2013 the company reduced its carbon footprint in all of its product categories, and in main areas such as the production of citric acid anhydrous, xanthan and biodegradable plasticizer, CITROFOL, with reductions amounting to 36%, 46% and 38% per ton of product, respectively.

In the same period the Jungbunzlauer corporate carbon footprint has seen a reduction of 19% per ton of final product. This reduction is also substantial when taking into consideration that growth of its specialty ingredients, which typically are more energy intensive to manufacture, has been particularly high, the company stated.

These achievements stem from a focused growth strategy of combining state-of-the-art process technology with an intensive and targeted investment program at the company’s four manufacturing sites in Austria, Canada, France and Germany.

Jungbunzlauer said it aspires to continued progress. Ongoing investments in excess of €100 million will not only grow the company’s capacity in many product areas and broaden the depth of its offering, but also support an even better performance when measuring the future emissions per ton of product produced.
