KD Pharma has launched its specially formulated KD Smart omega-3 oil, which the company developed to provide the same average ratio of omega-3 EPA and DHA found in mother’s milk.

“KD Smart is an important product for us,” said René Kamminga, vice president of nutrition for KD Pharma. “DHA plays a critical role in eye and cognitive health starting right from early development and continuing on throughout life. This particular product is designed to ensure expecting or nursing mothers receive sufficient DHA for both themselves and their growing baby.”

DHA is found throughout the body, but most prevalently in the brain and eye retina. Intake of omega-3 EPA and DHA is important because the human body itself cannot manufacture these nutrients. They are needed throughout life to support not only the development, but also the maintenance of brain and eye health.

They are particularly critical for both baby and mother during pregnancy and lactation. In the prenatal stage, fatty acids—especially DHA—are in high demand, accumulating in the infant’s brain, the eye retina, and throughout the body as a cellular component. Studies have shown this buildup is at its most rapid from gestation through the age of two. A developing baby’s sole source of DHA comes from mom, so KD Pharma has specially formulated KD Smart in the 1:4 ratio of EPA:DHA found in mother’s milk.
