Layn Natural Ingredients has announced the launch of TruGro Care Joint Health, a botanical extract solution formulated to support pets’ joint health. The new ingredient is suitable for pet food, treats, and supplements.

“Many products designed to promote joint integrity for our pet companions provide symptomatic relief by improving the range of motion or reducing discomfort,” said Jim Roza, chief scientific officer at Layn Natural Ingredients. “However, these products contribute little to resolving the underlying causes of joint dysfunction. Causes such as inflammation, bone resorption, and cartilage loss are all contributory factors that can manifest in a loss of strength, motion, and quality of life. Our TruGro Care Joint Health ingredient harnesses the power of polyphenols, demonstrated in numerous studies to inhibit oxidative stress, and thereby helping to address the root causes of joint discomfort and impairment.”

The formula contains three polyphenol-rich extracts designed to work together to support a healthy inflammatory response and bone, cartilage, and muscle health.

Epimedium is the source of a flavonoid called icariin, which has been studied to reduce bone resorption and promote osteoclast production to protect against bone loss. It has been studied to exert anabolic effects in bone through activating estrogen receptors in both animal and human studies.

Punicalagin, a phenolic compound in pomegranate, inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, Layn reports, which are reactive molecules that can have a damaging effect on healthy cells, tissues, and organs. Punicalagins are evidenced to attenuate acute and chronic inflammation through signaling pathways associated with autophagy, a process by which the body regulates inflammatory responses.

Mangiferin extract from mango leaf is another antioxidant shown to reduce oxidative stress by protecting the mitochondria nad inhibiting metabolic processes that lead to inflammation. Mangiferin also increases levels of innate cellular antioxidants, such as super oxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione.

With 52% of dogs and 41% of cats experiencing joint pain, and 36% of dog owners and 28% of cat owners purchasing joint health supplements often based on veterinarian advice, the market for pet joint health supplements is rapidly expanding,” said Dorsi Ip, marketing manager at Layn Natural Ingredients. “Pet owners are increasingly seeking natural ingredients for their pets, treating them as family members and prioritizing their well-being similarly to human health.”
