Layn Natural Ingredients, a supplier of botanical extracts and other solutions in the food, beverage, flavor, nutraceutical, personal care, and pet care industries, has unveiled an expanded biotechnology facility that will specialize in precision fermentation and enzyme-based technology.

SCROLL TO CONTINUE

The facility will optimize large-scale manufacturing of pure, sustainable bioactive ingredients. It will enhance Layn’s ability to produce pure ingredients, with greater degrees of efficiency and sustainability throughout the production process, the company reported.

The first new ingredient to come as a result of this expansion is Galacan, a heteropolysaccharide designed to serve as a highly-bioavailable and water-soluble alternative to traditional beta glucans.

Unlike conventional beta glucans derived from oats, yeast, algae, or mushrooms, Galacan is a unique heteropolysaccharide produced through precision fermentation. According to Layn, its spiral, conelike structure maximizes its ability to interact with receptor sites on immune cells, enhancing bioavailability and efficacy compared to glucans from conventional sources, due to an increased surface area. Galacan is highly water-soluble, making it versatile for a wide range of applications.

Galacan promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, including Lactobacillus brevis, which is associated with better gastrointestinal mucosa production. According to Layn, the ingredient also modulates inflammatory cytokines. Animal model studies suggest that the ingredient may support healthy blood glucose levels by enhancing pancreatic beta-cell function, while in vivo research suggests the ingredient may be involved in cellular ATP production, which is associated with reduced fatigue and better energy levels. Galacan is also INCI certified, and is suitable for nutricosmetic and topical formulations for skin health benefits. According to preclinical studies, the ingredient may promote wound healing and tissue repair factors.

Galacan has a self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) designation, and is in the process of obtaining FDA GRAS and Novel Food certifications to broaden its potential for inclusion in dietary supplements, foods, and beverages.

“The expansion through our biotechnology facility marks a new era for Layn Natural Ingredients, allowing us to push the boundaries of precision fermentation and enzyme production,” said James Roza, chief scientific officer at Layn Natural Ingredients. “With Galacan, we are redefining beta glucan innovation, offering enhanced bioavailability and functional benefits for supplements, foods, and beverages, as well as excellent applications in beauty, personal care, and animal nutrition.”
