Perstorp Presents New PU Technology

At the American Coatings Show (ACS) 2010 specialty chemical company Perstorp is presenting its new product range for polyurethane (PU) coatings and its strategy for the whole PU chain.

Perstorp has strengthened its PU coatings portfolio through a number of acquisitions of isocyanates, caprolactones and isophtalic acid businesses, which combined with its existing range of polyols, the extended product range and synergies in sales, production and development, have transformed Perstorp into a key supplier for the entire PU chain.

Strategically important additions to Perstorp’s coatings portfolio include isocyanates and polycaprolactones. Isocyanates are used as hardeners in coatings and elastomers, in foam products with major markets such as automotive (OEM and refinish), industrial maintenance, plastic and wood coatings, transportation, aerospace, coil and can coatings, leather finishing and adhesives. Perstorp recently announced its plans to increase HDI derivatives capacity in Europe and in China.

Perstorp is featuring several key products at ACS 2010. New fast-drying polyisocyanate Tolonate X FD 90 is one and reduces drying times up to 50%. It provides durability, chemical resistance and mechanical properties to high-performance PU coatings.

“This polyisocyanate provides an incredibly fast drying action,” said Chad Waldschmidt, Americas business director for Perstorp. “It allows coating manufacturers to produce non-yellowing two-component polyurethane paints and varnishes that dry quickly, offering their customers new opportunities to improve their productivity during the painting process.”

Another feature product is Charmor designed for a new generation of intumescent coatings. It creates a char barrier to insulate steel and wooden structures in the event of a fire. Charmor helps protect lives and property by reducing the rate of temperature rise and delaying or even avoiding structural collapses.

The company’s Easaqua self-emulsifiable polyisocyanates are also being highlighted. Perstorp offers Easaqua grades for the cross-linking of waterborne PU coatings, based on a patented technology. They offer an effective environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvent-based coatings.

“Perstorp and the acquired businesses share many customers in the polyurethane coatings and adhesives sector that can now benefit from a stronger product range,” said Eric Aubay, vice president HDI and derivatives. “We are looking forward to presenting our extended, comprehensive portfolio to the American Coatings Show visitors and demonstrating the many performances, processing enhancements and innovation capacities available to PU formulators. Our recent products are representing some key environmental benefits. As a responsible and reliable supplier for the whole polyurethane market, Perstorp’s strategy is to develop alternative environmentally friendly technologies.”
