The EU Commssion has approved Benexia Chia Seed, from Kearny, NJ-based Proprietary Nutritionals Inc. (PNI), as a Novel Food. The decision authorized the commercialization of the chia seed and ground seed in the EU market at a level of 5% in bread application following recommendations from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Benexia Chia products are available in Europe through Ingredia Nutritional as flour, oil, water-soluble omega 3 microencapsulated powder, or as bulk, sprouted or milled seed.

PNI has also obtained Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) approval for its Sytrinol heart-health ingredient following review of data by an independent expert panel assembled by AIBMR Life Sciences.
