Sirio Pharma, a global nutraceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has introduced a quality control initiative for nutrition product brand owners and their customers. The program, SirioSure, involves the same quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) efforts that Sirio provides for its own customers, to validate label claims, ingredient levels, and overall product quality.

The program leans into Sirio’s history as a legacy pharmaceutical manufacturer, bringing together a variety of activities. This includes supplier vetting, formulation development, ingredient shelf-life analyses, and production line data on the front end, to ensure the manufacturing process is exacting from conception.

Meanwhile, the company’s inspection and testing equipment, optimized facility floor plans, and system-wide, unit-level traceability provide transparency and oversight. Sirio’s inspection capabilities include modern laboratories, instruments, and equipment, with system-wide digitization and regular process reviews to create new guardrails.

Sirio Pharma noted that enhanced QA/QC efforts come at a time when studies conducted on dietary supplements are finding glaring quality issues, often generating negative press. For instance, a 2023 study they pointed to found that a mere 11% of 60 supplements tested provided the amount of ingredients listed on their labels.

The company noted that the quality initiative is living and breathing, and the company has short-term plans to procure a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) system, which will deepen the company’s particle detection and analysis. Among other benefits, the system will enhance Sirio Pharma’s ability to detect and deter pesticide residues.

“Since Sirio was originally a pharmaceutical company, we’ve always brought a pharma-grade approach to quality assurance and control,” said Sara Lesina, general manager of Sirio Europe & Americas. “We pride ourselves on developing and manufacturing products that include what their labels say they include, and perform how brand owners promise they’ll perform. To accomplish this amid an ever-expanding global marketplace, our SirioSure quality management protocols are constantly evolving to meet and exceed various regional regulations and customer requirements.”

“At Sirio Pharma, our commitment to providing safe and reliable products drives us to continuously pursue higher quality,” said Ryan Li, head of quality at Sirio Pharma. “We are harnessing the power of technological advancements, from advanced process monitoring and automated inspection systems to AI and other digital tools, to enhance our quality standards, ensure food safety, and contribute to the advancement of global health.”
