Two manufacturers of branded CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) have attained GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for their products following a coordinated submission to FDA.
Tonalin CLA, from Cognis Nutrition & Health, LaGrange, IL, and Clarinol CLA, from Lipid Nutrition, Channahon, IL, can now be applied to an expanded range of functional foods and beverages such as milk and flavored milk products, yogurt, fruit juice, soy milk and meal replacement beverages and bars. Tonalin CLA is also self-affirmed GRAS for coffee creamers and chocolate.
FDA’s written response provides assurance to food manufacturers and consumers that the agency has reviewed the submitted safety evidence and does not object to the overall GRAS conclusions.
Scientific evidence indicates, Tonalin CLA helps consumers reduce body fat up to 9%, prevents fat regain, and improves the ratio of lean body mass to body fat.
“Tonalin could help revolutionize the way people reduce body fat,” said David Eckert, vice president, Cognis Nutrition & Health. “Our goal is to support our customers as they help consumers achieve their body composition goals with delicious, yet healthy foods and beverages. As the most recognized brand of CLA, Tonalin is the ingredient of choice for functional food and beverages targeting consumers interested in safely and effectively improving their body composition by reducing body fat.”
Tonalin CLA is available in several product forms—oil, water-dispersible powder and emulsions—which offer a broad range of options and easy processing for new products. It is naturally sourced from safflowers.
Lipid Nutrition’s Clarinol CLA is available in both a liquid and a powder form.
“Clarinol CLA provides an exceptional opportunity for American food companies to differentiate themselves on a crowded grocery store shelf or refrigerated dairy section of the store,” said Katinka Abbenbroek, CEO of Lipid Nutrition. “It currently is one of the only weight management ingredients available for functional foods, which make it very unique in the market place.”
