Aker BioMarine Antarctic Supports Earth Hour 2015

By: Lisa Olivo

For the 2nd year in a row, Aker BioMarine Antarctic, a supplier of krill-derived products to the consumer health and wellness and animal nutrition markets, is supporting the global Earth Hour movement. Earth Hour 2015, organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. On Saturday, March 28 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm local time, Aker BioMarine shut off the lights on its three vessels in the Southern Ocean.

“To me, Earth Hour is an important global symbolic hour, reminding us of what each of us can do to reduce our footprint and stand together against climate change,” said Hallvard Muri, CEO, Aker BioMarine Antarctic.

Aker BioMarine actively collaborates with environmental organizations around the globe, including the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Norway) to develop and apply best practices in its own fishing operations in Antarctica.

This month, the company renewed its partnership agreement with WWF-Norway to strengthen its focus on the environment.

“WWF-Norway’s motivation in working with businesses is to achieve powerful environmental results. The work we have done together with Aker BioMarine has been very successful in this regard, and has contributed to strengthening the management, research and monitoring of the Southern Ocean. We are happy to continue this joint effort in order to secure the health of the ocean and protect the krill for future generations,” said Nina Jensen, CEO of WWF-Norway.

“WWF-Norway has been a true partner to Aker BioMarine in our sustainability efforts. Since 2009, WWF-Norway has constantly pushed us toward best practices, and is now also a partner in the founding of The Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund (AWR). We are excited to be able to celebrate the new partnership agreement by participating in Earth Hour 2015,” said Sigve Nordrum, sustainability director, Aker BioMarine.
