Chobani Launches Charitable Peanut Butter Flavored Spreads

Sales profits from the newly-launched nutritional spreads will go to childhood hunger and malnutrition non-profit Edesia Nutrition.

Chobani will introduce Chobani Ends Child Hunger Peanut Butter Flavored Nutrient Spreads to peanut butter aisles, in a partnership with the non-profit Edesia Nutrition, which is dedicated to reducing childhood hunger and malnutrition globally.

With 100% of the sales profits dedicated to Edesia Nutrition, the product will also solve the dual purpose of introducing peanuts to infants. The profits will be dedicated directly to production and shipping of Edesia’s Plumpy’Nut, a fortified peanut butter, to 60 countries around the world. The product will be offered to children with acute malnutrition.

“We believe that children, no matter where they live, deserve the basic human right of food and nutrition. From Afghanistan to Haiti, hunger and malnutrition is completely preventable,” Edesia founder and CEO Navyn Salem, said. “Chobani’s commitment to donate 100% of the profits from the sales of its peanut butter flavored spreads will help make this vision possible.”

The special line of nutrient spreads is formulated to reduce the choking hazard associated with the early introduction of peanuts, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Chobani reports. Early introduction of peanuts, between the ages of 4 and 6 months, could help to reduce peanut allergies by 80% among at-risk children, such as those with mild, moderate, or severe eczema and/or an egg allergy, who should consume peanut-containing foods under medical supervision, AAP reports.

“Edesia was the first non-profit participant in our incubator program in 2019, and we knew we had to work together because our missions are very aligned,” Hamdi Ulukaya, Chobani founder and CEO, said. “Childhood hunger in the U.S. and malnutrition globally are dual crises, and we have the opportunity and the responsibility to take additional action through this beautiful partnership.”

Haiti has been particularly impacted by crisis as of late, following a devastating earthquake in August, and Chobani responded immediately to the disaster with financial assistance to rescue and relief partners. Now, through the proceeds from the peanut butter-flavored spreads, Chobani will be able to provide a full 7-week treatment of Plumpy’Nut to over 2,000 children in Haiti through its partnership with Edesia. As an added benefit to the local economy in Haiti, the product is being made at a facility there.
