Nutralliance/Ildong Achieve GRAS for Probiotic Strains

The independent safety review of seven probiotic strains demonstrates to consumers that the probiotics were vetted through studies and expert panel consensus.

Seven strains of probiotics produced by Ildong Biosciences were given GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status, according to AnaMaria Cuentas, director of probiotics for Nutralliance, Inc., Ildong’s exclusive sales and marketing partner in North America. At this point, all of Ildong Biosciences’ probiotic strains have been given GRAS status, which is done through an independent review, with the latest designations coming from third-party testing service AIBMR.

The seven strains are: Bacillus subtilis IDCC 1101; Bifidobacterium bifidum IDCC 4201; Bifidobacterium longum IDCC 4101; Lactobacillus gasseri IDCC 3101; Lactobacillus helveticus IDCC 3801; Lactobacillus salivarius IDCC 3551; and Lactobacillus fermentum IDCC 3901. The GRAS for these strains completes the portfolio of 19 strains of quadruple-coated probiotics offered by Nutralliance and are available as single strain solutions or custom blends.

“Achieving our GRAS status with the help of the AIBMR team was an imperative step to certify that our ingredients are safe,” Cuentas said.

She said that obtaining an independent GRAS conclusion for these quadruple-coated probiotic strains “strengthens both industry and consumer confidence in our science-based ingredients and creates a multitude of opportunities for our North American customers to remain at the forefront of the market.”

GRAS ingredients have the advantage of being able to be incorporated into a variety of foods and beverages. Achieving GRAS also provides consumers with the knowledge that ingredients have been vetted through multiple studies and expert panel consensus to confirm the safety and efficacy of strains.

“Obtaining GRAS status is a significant milestone for the exclusive supply of Ildong Probiotics and is an indication of our strong commitment to the efficacy and safety of these ingredients,” Cuentas said. “As ingredient suppliers, Nutralliance operates by a set of rules which set boundaries for the supply of products in the supplement, pet, and personal care space, but, most importantly, prioritize the safety of the consumer. Achieving our independent conclusion of GRAS is a pivotal moment for both our quadruple coated probiotics and our company. It signifies that we are doing our jobs and excelling within the regulatory guidelines to better serve the industry. With the new GRAS approvals, we have achieved that benchmark and look forward to the continued supply of next-generation probiotic ingredients.”
