A dietary supplement made up of Lactobacillus strains and an herbal complex, marketed as ResB Lung Support by ResBiotic, was linked to significant improvements in measures of lung function and quality of life scores, in a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition.
 
The population, which was made up of 11 healthy participants and 11 people diagnosed with asthma, took a daily dose of the dietary supplement for four weeks.
 
In the asthmatic portion of the population, there were significant improvements in lung function compared to baseline, based on the D’Agostino and Pearson test of normality. Additionally, quality of life score improvements trended toward significance in the population with asthma. Additionally, of the seven participants who smoked, who had asthma, or who had asthma and smoked, 36% reported an improvement in overall health, 43% noted less frequent coughing, 43% noted fewer instances of feeling short of breath, and 29% noted fewer cough or breathing related sleep disturbances,” the authors noted.
 
Additionally, the ingredient was associated with improved serum short chain fatty acid levels in asthmatic subjects, who, notably, had prominent levels of E. coli, Bacteroidetes dorei, and B. ovatus and lower beta- and alpha-diversity compared to the healthy participants.
 
According to the authors, the significant improvements in FEV1%, a measure of lung function, “may have been due to the significant uptick in serum SCFAs which traveled through systemic circulation and reduced inflammation in the lungs. Nevertheless, the sample size in this study is too small to determine a direct correlation, and larger studies would be necessary to confirm this correlation.”
 
More subjective findings included that most participants were highly likely to recommend ResB Lung Support.
