Lumenato, a blend of colorless, tomato-derived carotenoids and lipids marketed by Lycored, was evidenced to exert protective effects on the skin barrier, as well as collagen and ceramide condition, after 12 weeks of daily oral supplementation. The findings of the study were published in Skin Research & Technology.

The ingredient, sourced from golden tomatoes, contains beta-carotene, zeta-carotene, phytoene, and phytofluece, as well as healthy lipids, which together can support skin structure and barrier function.

Skin barrier function is crucial for keeping external pollutants and bacteria away, as well as to retain moisture as measured through trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). Together, barrier function and moisture measurements improve skin appearance and elasticity and promote faster healing from damaging factors like UV, Lycored reports.

In the present study, 59 healthy women between the ages of 35 and 55 of varying ethnicities and skin types were studied. The women had a baseline TEWL of less than or equal to 12g/M2/hr, and were randomized to receive either 10mg total carotenoids daily or placebo for 12 weeks.

After three months, the treatment group experienced significant improvements in measurements of skin barrier strength, firmness, and elasticity compared to placebo. This included a 10.4% reduction in TEWL, while skin barrier strength increased by 59.9%. Cutometer measurements of skin firmness and elasticity also improved by 9.34% and 11.6% respectively, which is visible through a decrease in fine lines, wrinkles, and skin sagging.

This study reinforces earlier findings from 2021 which linked Lumenato supplementation to significant improvements in skin elasticity, firmness, brightness, wrinkles, and other measures of skin health.

“The benefits of Lumenato start on the inside and work their way to the skin’s surface. It not only improves internal systems like collagen and ceramide protection but ripples outward to the skin barrier for skin radiance and glow,” said Elizabeth Tarshish, lead author of the study and  Since a majority of the population deals with skin barrier disturbances during winter or summer, we’re pleased to learn that this unique carotenoid formulation is promising to support health and enhance beauty from within after only three months.”
