Novozymes OneHealth Debuts in U.S. to Target ‘Profound’ Consumer Health Challenges

Company aims to ‘rethink tomorrow’ with diverse, clinically substantiated product portfolio.

Denmark-based biotech solutions company Novozymes, which aims to preserve the planet’s resources and help build better lives through biology, has debuted its B2B human health growth platform, Novozymes OneHealth, in the U.S.

The company works with partners to create unique products with validated, targeted modes of action. Each offering addresses clear and profound consumer health challenges related to modern lifestyles, like stress, brain health, immune function, and more.

‘One-in-a-Trillion’ Microbial Solutions

Novozymes has a long history of expertise with enzymes and microbes. “We have a bank of millions of enzymes,” noted Alexander Lommer Broe, global brand manager, Novozymes OneHealth. “We want to find what we call the needle in the haystack, the ‘one-in-a-trillion solution’; that one product that helps a specific challenge.”

All Novozymes OneHealth products are supported by clinical studies and intellectual property protection, he added. “It is in in our DNA to have proven, clinical substantiation behind all our products.”

It takes a lot of time to develop and clinically-document new products, noted Lommer Broe. To help kickstart its mission, Novozymes has made several acquisitions in the last few years, including two B2C companies in 2020.

Illinois-based Microbiome Labs offers proprietary probiotic and microbiome solutions through a network of health practitioners; and Ireland-based PrecisionBiotics Group has discovered, developed, and commercialized a range of proprietary probiotic solutions for clinical and consumer markets.

Vitamin K2

In the B2B market, Novozymes acquired Synergia Life Sciences in late 2021, along with the company’s range of probiotic spores and its vitamin K2 brand MenaquinGold, which is made through a chickpea-based, soy-free fermentation process.

MenaquinGold may support bone and heart health, and new science shows potential benefits related to nerve and sports health, according to the company.

With emerging research and growing consumer awareness thanks to educational campaigns, Lommer Broe said he believes vitamin K2 can be “the next vitamin D or omega-3.”

Postbiotic and Probiotic Solutions

Novozymes OneHealth also offers Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly known as Lactobacillus reuteri) DSM 17648; branded Pylopass, this postbiotic solution may help to reduce the load of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach.

About 50% of the global population is affected by Helicobactor Pylori, a common bacterium that can cause gastric upset. This equates to around 4 billion people who could benefit from support.

Meanwhile, ProbioBrain Bifidobacterium longum 1714 is a probiotic solution that targets the gut-brain axis and has been shown in two placebo-controlled clinical trials to help adults handle the psychological and physical responses to everyday stress, help reduce cortisol output in response to everyday stress, and help to maintain a calm state of mind and emotional balance.

In 2021, global consumers rated mental wellbeing as the most significant criterion (64.1%) when it came to their perception of health, according to Euromonitor International. Supplements for brain health in North America are a growing business opportunity estimated by Grand View Research to be worth $4 billion by 2025, with an expected growth rate of 7.2%,

Enzymes for Oral Health

The company’s BioFresh 4+ is an enzymatic solution that can eliminate oral malodor for up to 4 hours, according to Novozymes OneHealth.

Self-perceived “bad breath” affects as much as half of Americans, according to a proprietary consumer insights study, and disturbs the intimacy of 70% of consumers surveyed.

BioFresh 4+ contains a plant extract that binds bad breath-causing molecules and neutralizes them in a multistep reaction, without harming the oral microbiota, the company said. The plant extract is activated by a natural enzyme that positions the plant extract to interact with and neutralize specific malodorous breath molecules.

Novozymes OneHealth recently introduced BioFresh Clean, a new oral health solution that responds to consumer needs for more efficient and convenient oral care solutions.

BioFresh Clean is a clinically proven enzyme combination that removes and reduces oral biofilm for a cleaner and healthier oral cavity, while maintaining a healthy oral microbiome, the company said.

With advanced formatting options for on-the-go consumers, BioFresh Clean supports the need to expand oral care routines with safe, natural, portable solutions.

Safeguarding from Lead and Toxins

The company also offers a probiotic called SmartGuard that it selected and developed to protect from daily lead exposure, helping to safeguard healthy development of kids.

Globally, one in three children, or up to 800 million, may have high levels of lead in their blood, according to UNICEF. Lead can be found throughout the environment, in contaminated food/water, air, soil, paint, and even on some toys. Lead is known to produce a spectrum of health issues across multiple body systems.

Backed by in vitro scientific research, SmartGuard has been shown to be safe for daily use and is produced and tested in compliance with EU quality standards, the company said.

In November, Novozymes announced a partnership with Linus Biotechnology Inc., a leader in precision exposome sequencing, to conduct a clinical trial on Novozymes OneHealth’s probiotics using LinusBio’s environmental biodynamics platform, which enables detailed temporal mapping of harmful compound exposure.

The clinical trial will assess exposure to heavy metals, such as lead, and a range of environmental pollutants. Utilizing a single strand of hair, LinusBio’s proprietary exposome and biological response sequencing platform can generate data similar to several hundred liquid biopsies and reconstruct the subjects’ exposure to environmental toxicants over time.

The study will be conducted in Mexico, where environmental lead exposure remains a significant public health issue.
