Microphyt, a company specializing in bioactive ingredients derived from microalgae, will introduce a new ingredient at SupplySide West called ZenGut, which was evidenced to improve intestinal function, digestive comfort, and gut microbiota.
ZenGut is derived from the Tetradesmus obliquus Mi175.B1 strain, which is produced in France using Microphyt’s patented hydro-biomimetic technology. The technology replicates natural biological environments, enabling scalable cultivation of diverse microalgae strains. The company operates what it reports to be the world’s first fully-integrated two-phase flow process photobioreactors, which mimic the optimal conditions for microalgae growth while enhancing the efficiency of bioactive compound extraction.
ZenGut contains a blend of bioactives that function as prebiotics, such as essential fatty acids, carotenoids, essential amino acids, sterols, and PEA, a naturally-occurring neuromodulator.
In a soon-to-be-published study, a daily serving of 250 mg of ZenGut significantly alleviated self-reported gastrointestinal discomfort, mood, and mental well-being, while also enhancing the diversity of the gut microbiota, over a four-week treatment period.
“Harmony starts from within, and our research demonstrates that ZenGut positively influences the gut-brain axis, which is central to both gut health and mood regulation,” said Jonathan Maury, clinical research manager at Microphyt. “Neurotransmitters that regulate mood are largely produced in the gut, so imbalances in the gut microbiota can lead to both digestive issues and emotional strain. By addressing these two aspects together, ZenGut naturally fosters a balanced gut and promotes mental well-being, helping to reduce stress and enhance overall well-being.”
